The new compacts are as good as the old carbon-spewing bulbs, and now come in smaller sizes for chandliers. They can be purchased in different levels of brightness equivalent to 60 and 100 watts incandescent bulbs while using only 13 - 15 watts.

What no one is talking about is the very high leelvs of mercury in CFL's. There is no current easy way to dispose of these not so eco friendly bulbs. Also there are no regulations which state manufacturers must place warning labels on packaging to alert the consumers of the high leelvs of mercury. This is the main reason I went back to standard long lasting incandescent bulbs. Until LED becomes more available this is the only choice for me and my family.
