Democrats Debate User's Video Questions
By reli4nt
In a first for the American presidential debate, eight Democratic candidates answered questions from users. The questions were selected by CNN from almost 3000 submissions via YouTube. the questions differed from traditional debates. One question aimed at Clinton asked "how would you define the word 'liberal?' And would you use this word to describe yourself?" A broadly directed question later asked "All of you say you will be able to work with Republicans. Well, here's a test. If you had to pick any Republican member of Congress or Republican governor to be your running mate, who would it be?"
The debate took place in Charleston, South Carolina Monday night. The candidates included:
- Senator Joe Biden
- Senator Hillary Clinton
- Senator Christopher Dodd
- Former Senator John Edwards
- Former Senator Mike Gravel
- Senator Barack Obama
- Representative Dennis Kucinich
- Governor Bill Richardson
September 17th YouTube and CNN have scheduled a Republican candidate debate.

I actually caught part of that on the news during my lunch hour today, I think it's a great idea! I dont generally have a very high opinion of YouTube.com but this however is an excellent way to bring bring people into the issues and to *hopefully* get them voting. I stopped watching regular debates long ago because they were so very boring and dry.. always the same issues covered in an extremely impersonal manner. Granted many of the usual issues were covered: gay marriage, health care, the war in Iraq, racism, etc.. But, I thought it was a beautiful thing to be able to put faces to these issues, like the cancer patient that took her wig off during her video. So I really hope they continue with this idea and further it into something more. I think if done right, it could really do a lot to getting people involved.
"With all my faith
And all my heart
And all those simple things you are"
I agree that having the populace ask the questions bring a human face to the issues and make it much more relevant and interesting. I, too, was moved by the woman who took off her wig. I thought how courageous of her to put the issue ahead of her ego. We need to see more role models who will remind us of what is truly important in life.
I am looking forward to seeing the Republican debate in September, under the same format.
We are still facing a lot of challenges around our whole election system. See the other articles in our Leadership category on the subject of Governance.
