Beginning November 12 the One Laptop Per Child program will introduce its Give One Get One program where consumers can purchase one of the devices of $399 and a second will be sent to a child in a developing country. The laptops were designed for children in developing countries and include features such as a tough durable exterior, hand crank for powering the device in places where electricity is unavailable and the ability to network with one another. The program is sometimes still referred to as the $100 Laptop based on the intended original cost of the products.

Sales have been slow and it is hoped the current promotion will increase donations by encouraging gifts to Western children. The devices have very modest processing capacities and since designed for poor lees-developed areas it will be interesting to see if they will amount to anything more than dust covered novelties in closets of Western children.

It seems a blemish on the spirit of the program to see that giving has to be motivated by getting something that we don't need and may not even use in return. I hope I am wrong.
