Imaginal Musings

Imaginal Musings7/12/07 Intro Article LET’S PRETEND THE INNER AND OUTER WORLDS ARE SEPARATE We gotta Transform This Planet (TRFP)! This site provides many suggestions for how to move the TRFP project ahead. In this particular section we pretend that a person's internal world is separate from the external world. This is a quite common and shared perspective that our thoughts and feelings exist in a different space than our cars and governments. We presume that working with our internal world is essential to increase our effectiveness, efficiency, and resilience as we engage the outer world with our TRFP actions. Both outer and inner worlds merit attention, and here we focus on the potential of inner world work. We presume that practice applied to our inner world, say in distinguishing between happiness and success, just as practice in the outer world, say, with a chain saw, or a knitting needle, makes us more effective. HOW MUCH OF WHO YOU ARE IS NOT WHO YOU ARE? In the above sentences we have already broken the wholeness of ALL, into what we are, and what we are not, or what is subjective and what is objective. The ability to move our point of view from being embedded in our thoughts and feelings, to being a viewer of our thoughts and feelings is a relatively new ability for two leggeds. You can see this species developmental trend recapitulated in yourself and other two leggeds you know. A child has no objectivity, a teenage might have a few moments, and adults often, and not always, show a steady increase in scope of objectivity. For some people, they will genuinely, authentically, have no interest in, and in some cases capacity for, increased objectivity. So, if you find this Inner World work of little interest, not to worry! There are plenty of other opportunities to engage your imagination on this site. Look around and get involved. For those of you who are attracted to work in this inner domain, here we go. IT’S VERY FAIR TO TRICK YOUR OWN MIND I have established the core practice of moving elements of who we are, to elements we are aware of, i.e. moving what we are subject to, to what is object for us. Many of you have already seen this is not something new. This is the old adage, in barely new clothes, "Know yourself". But be careful. You have a subjective knowing of what "know yourself" means. And this knowing will arise with a sense of certainty, of closure, and shut you off from learning. Thus, I have been speaking of subject and object, vs. the more common phrasing “know yourself” so as to do an end run around your "knowledge" and open up the possibility of learning something new. POSSESSION IS ENDEMIC, I.E. OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROGRESS ABOUND For starters, pay attention to when you are possessed by anything. You could be possessed by a hunger for a truffle, fear of illness, affection towards a pet, how to clear up your credit rating, a desire to transform the planet, etc. You have already become, and will become more, familiar with your personal menagerie of stuff that has you. It is a great step forward in effectiveness to simply notice what has you. This noticing, just in itself, moves what imprisons you to what can serve you. So, there is not a lot of hard work necessary here for progress. Just notice what your thoughts and feelings are. Each moment of noticing, just in itself, increases the habit of objectivity. That habit is essential, monumental, work in the Inner World. BTW, as far as I can tell this is a lifetime discipline...you don't get it completed, ever. So put this discipline in the category of teeth brushing. Practice: Create a daily list numbered one to ten. Fill in just 10 things a day for one week that possess you. Post your list here if you think it might move this conversation forward. Tom C.
